One thing I have been having some fun with is a simulated multi-tap
delay, which makes for cool rock guitar sounds a la older Aerosmith.

What you do is get your favorite Marshall tone, and input a stereo "2-2"
config.

For the first one, pan the whole module hard left. Then select "Quad delay"
module. Make the delay in milliseconds - 17 to 24 ms- and it gives you four
tap points that you can pan left from 0 to 99 and each at a 0 to 100%
volume. I do it in steps, with 100% volume far left pan (99), then 75% at
about 64L, then 50% at 40L, and 25% at 20L...you get the idea, the signal is
spread out and feed into the system at various pan points with a slight
delay.

Then for the second stereo module slot you do the same thing, only reverse
it. Choose Quad delay. Pan whole module right. Then quad delay, and set
ms at bigger level like 36 (so there is a "spread") and then do the four
pans and four volumes, just a 1% or 2 off of the left side's.

Voila, -- 8 point tap plus direct sound. Experiment with volume levels for
each of the delays and also the 24ms times, like 17-19 on one side and 33 on
another. A very fat sound, sounds like multiple mics.

Think about "Adams Apple" on Toys in the Attic, that ballsy sound...I like
it more for humbuckers thus far... and I think the methodology I outlined
here could be improved upon by some of you brainiac types out there! I got
inspired for this when running through my SansAMP PSA into a Roland VS-2480
and I selected a "multi-tap delay" effect from the card/board and it had
something like 12 tapped delays points and I was in heaven.

If I had another JM 150 module slot I'd throw a chamber reverb last on it,
and pan that 80% towards one side, to get a secondary wash of sound after
the initial died a bit. Jimmy Page used to do that. You can do that if you
use a 2-4-4- combo in stereo and use a dual instead of quad delay in slot #2
to try it. Remember to pan the reverb on 1st page towards one side (but not
hard, more like 80-20)

I've been able to spend some more time lately with the Jm150...I think Kevin
is right, use the Mesa Boogie II Combo in "clean A" mode with a PEQ "Curve
3" as your first module slot and a little verb and it sounds killer with a
Strat, it's making me actually prefer it to the Fender Twin model if you can
believe it.

My musings...hope they are helpful. I really hope to have some time to do
some killer patches and send them to John for his website, I'm getting more
critical of my olds ones. Super tweaking!!!

Here is the jazz/methenyish patch I use for most clean soloing.

Sounds great doing octaves.

A Channel

4.9 Gain

4.6 treble

5.0 mid

7.6 bass

10 level

Blackface Twin Model

Config Series "Full"

Use Room Echo module Set to 'Springy" Level 50%

Shape: Flat Spread:

10 Diffusion

100% Feedback

Delay 5ms-

Amount 31%

01-27-2002

I play a Zion R/T Classic, which is very strat-like (and very awesome). Use your neck pickup and keep your treble down. Boosting the reverb level to 85% almost gives a delayish feel to the sound. This is a superb tone to have in your pocket for mellow stuff. The reverb almost sounds lexiconish to me on this particular patch.

Most of these use Strats except where noted, and I have the J-12 set up for effects on/off and pedals for things like gain control or effect parameters like reverb time etc.

Wes Tremolo Blue.syx 01-27-2002 WES TREMOLO BLUE is Wes Montgomery
ROY Solo.syx 01-27-2002 ROY SOLO is an attempt to get a Roy Buchanan Tele lead patch.
RY.syx 01-27-2002 RY  is an attempt to get a good slide guitar patch.
Carlton 01.syx 01-27-2002 CARLTON 01 is yet anothe rattempt at a realistic Larry Carlton patch that is expressive when you play using dynamics.  A humbucker patch

LGeorge.syx

01-27-2002 LGEORGE is a Lowell George Patch I worked on forever but am still not quite happy with, but it's not bad, especially channel A with phaser and compressor on
fender twin king.mid 01-27-2002 "fender twin king" is the amp set the way New Orleans R&B Earl King sets it up.  I copied the settings when I met him.

Quite Ill 06-02-2000 In the good old stomp box days ;-) I enjoyed playing around with the delay time knob on the Boss digital delay. Very funny, psychedelic sounds. "Quite Ill"' is the JM-version of this sound, pedal #1 assigned to delay time.
No Way 06-02-2000 We're playing Fastball's "The Way" with my party band. I don't know what amps were used on their record, but I got satisfying results w/ the matchless for Chorus and Solo (Footswitch #8 gives you a boost plus a slapback delay for soloing). In the verse I use a Fender patch @ channel B, but I'm not 100% happy with that, so I didn't include it. If anyone's got better patches for this song, feel free to send me an e-mail.
Strobe Pre-Reverb 02/23/2000 The 'Strobe pre reverb' links the LFO modifier to the noise gate on/off switch. This one doesn't eat any S-DISC ressources. As disadvantages, you lose noise gate functionality (but you may use the volume pedal to eliminate noise while you're not playing), and room effects decay will not be 'chopped'.

Footswitches :#6 - channel switching; #7 - phaser (or flanger) on/off; #8 - strobe effect on/off; #9 - spring reverb on/off; #10 - volume boost
Strobe speed is controlled by LFO 1. To change speed, press 'EDIT', then press 'ASSIGN' twice, proceed to Page 17 and modify LFO speed.

Strobe Post-Reverb 02/23/2000 The 'Strobe post reverb' links the LFO modifier to a 1/4 'silent' effect on/of switch (I used an Autopan and turned the volume down to 0%; for less radical effect, turn it up to, say, 20%). This one is able to chop the reverb, too.

Footswitches :
#6 - channel switching; #7 - phaser (or flanger) on/off; #8 - strobe effect on/off; #9 - spring reverb on/off; #10 - volume boost
Strobe speed is controlled by LFO 1. To change speed, press 'EDIT', then press 'ASSIGN' twice, proceed to Page 17 and modify LFO speed.

ok, i admit -- i own a Jerry Jones sitar, pretty cool. I developed these two modest patches for it on the Jm 150 (Ver 1.05 OS).
BUT I noticed, due to config set up, that the Sitar Flange/Wah works pretty well for people looking for a Jerry Garcia envelope filter type sound (with regular guitars), the PEQ brings out the normally "weak" volume auto wah feature.

Silvertone ? just what it says, Like an old 50's Sears Silvertone tin-ny tremelo amp sound, think Southern Culture on the Skids or bayou rock.
Band_of_GYPSYS.mid ? Some one asked to get the Hendrix soudn from that album,. here's my attempt.
Carlton_Solo_BOOGIE.mid ? -
Classic_SRV.mid ? I like this one better than the factory, it's got an edge.

these are all based on a Legacy patch someone else created and I tweaked, I'm a Vai nut. I think this is the smoothest tone around. Need ver 1.05 and a J-12. The basic PATCH is cool "VAI LEGACY.mid" -- try downloading that first, and if you like the sound, then the other VAI patches just add various wild effects. Play around with the pedals and switchs. I think the auto wah is pretty cool. The Maj/Min is cool, use the J-12 pedal to switch the harmony note to be a minor or major note while you whizz up and down the frets in runs (faux intelligent harmony). Shadow is a great reverse/echo patch. Strat boost is for using for with a 2 or 4 pickup switch on a Strat. The "Octopus" patches aren't what you think (not octaver) -- they actually kill the dry sound and do some VERY interesting arpeggio things in stereo based on the input note into the left/right speakers. Think about the fast keyboard intro "Snoopy & the Red baron" by Billy Cobham.

Zionic Solo 12/12/1999 Based on the Legacy patch
BUDDY GILL
It's Belewerp 12/12/1999 a cool 1.84 second loop, the classic Roland JC-120 chorus sound, plus a reverse guitar (toggle #9) and hold/repeat loop(#10) function so you can solo after the loop is just right, just make weird collages of layered sounds... You need 1.05 OS to use, plus J-12
SansAmp PSA Fender Twin 12/12/1999 in my elusive search, I used my fender twin, set it up to a real time analyzer, and then tweaked the JM 150...to get the frequencies to match up best I could...with my ear too. Here's the patch I came up with...for a Strat (esp. the neck pickup)...it really sounds "different" and possibly better than the stock Johnson '65 Fender Twin, with some very interesting PEQ6 and slight compression (PEQ is switchable so you can judge/compare tones). Also, I ran those (PEQ, Compression) on one track (2 config 1/4 modules) and the chorus delay/reverb on the second track (2 config 1/4 modules)...it made a real difference in the final sound, sounded better than doing the four direct in series/less "in your face" wet effects. Oh yeah, a wah is in there too...The tone is (IMHO) VERY reminiscent of "1983...a merman i will turn to be" on Electric LadyLand by Hendrix.  Or Eric Johnson's "TradeMark"...you'll get some amp background hum if you are too close to the amp. You need the Updater, the J-12, and Ver 1.05 OS to use this patch.
Fender Princeton 12/12/1999 some folks on this list were looking for that classic warm Jazz guitar sound...here it is, a super Fender Princeton, warm with tremolo...Channel A only use neck pickup on a Strat with guitar tone knob turned down to 7...if you have humbucker guitar (I tried iy on a 335 copy), then decrease the gain on the patch from 7.8 to as low as 6ish, and use neck pickup (but it really sounds a little better on a Strat). you need Updater, Ver. 1.05 OS.  Hell it sounds good picking Strawberry Field too. <g>
RICK M THOMAS
These were saved from V1.03, but work on my V1.05. These ARE patches I play my accoustic guitar through.
Erase You.mid 12/12/1999 Erase You -- Very cool effect, I use it with my 12 string -- a sweeping flange is applied to the reverb signal only, if you are strumming rapidly, you can hear the voices of angels, I use it on a song with strong breaks
Strum & Pick.mid 12/12/1999 Strum & Pick -- my all around accoustic preset, the reverb has been well tweaked and is very nice in stereo
To Win Your Love.mid 12/12/1999 To Win Your Love -- has an analog delay, and a nice ambient spring tank infinity that is linked to the expression pedal -- For a big finish, I go with distortion on the 12 string, as the notes start to feed back, I bring the pedal down, then cut the volume -- the lights go down, and jaws are left hanging open
Sascha Düx
Here's some of my sounds for your amazing patch library. I play a Fender American Standard Strat.
Clean 2 Pop ? Here's some of my sounds for your amazing patch library. I play a Fender American Standard Strat. My attempt of getting close to that 80s ultra clean tone. there's Chorus and Compressor on it. I use it on our version of Toto's "Rosanna" that can be downloaded from www.partysahne.ist-im-netz.de.
Plastique Solo ? my Rosanna lead sound
Da Dub WauWau ? as I hate the JM's built-in "AutoWah" effect, I assigned a dynamic modifier to the analog wah. Maybe you'll have to turn down your guitars volume a bit, if you use stronger pickups. Try this sound with the neck PU and play the solo of "What I Am" by E. Brickell and the New Bohemians! You can also do some funny dub sounds. Exp. 1 is assigned to analog delay.
Sascha Düx
The following sounds are modifications of johnson factory sounds optimized for Control One users. With these sounds, you can use the single exp. pedal either as a volume or as a wah pedal (Footswitch #10 pressed). There are some FX assigned to other footswitches, too.
Tha Twin ? -
Matchless Blues ? -
Tube ? My favorite crunch sound
Custom Marshall ? -
Tha Lead ? -
"Macarena" ? My party band started playing a slightly ironic version of the Macarena some months ago. To avoid becoming out-of-work I tried to emulate the main synth riff sound (there's still enough strange synth stuff left for both hands of our keyboard player). There's lots of gating to make the attack sound more 'unnatural', you'll have to experiment with your guitar's volume setting.
Sascha Düx
For these you need da JM150, ver. 1.05...and J-12 floor controller.
Gated Q ? Here's a little patch I created. I've been trying to create sort of a VCF-filter-sweep sound by assigning the EXP 1 pedal to two fully boosted PEQ-Band-Frequencies. Additionally there's a slow gate to make the sound more "synthish" and some delay.
Jay Rider

DynDelnFlanFB ? is a dynamic delay and dynamic Flanger together. The idea is to play staccato  1/4 notes at a tempo of about 171 (350 milliseconds). Play with the delay a scale or arpeggiated chord sequence. No flange is present until you stop playing and mute the strings, then the flange level comes up as well as the flange feedback and depth and the delay feedback.
CleanGatedWhammy ? is Whammy madness on the clean channel with a slow attack kinda horn like. I am able to get some decent chords out of this as long as they aren't too dissonent (major, minor).
Kevin Brown
Hope you enjoy them! These patches were developed using both Les Paul and Strat. Seem to sound good on both and sound great on the Zion.
blues patch ? Here is the blues patch I posted info about the other week. I loved the tone of the slide blues patch, but the whammy gave it weird overtones I didn't like. I ditched it all in favor of a full module reverb that sounds very spacious. Your expression pedal will vary the gain between points I found pleasing. I got several compliments on this patch Sunday. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Tip: Play with the full module reverbs. They are sonically much better than the smaller modules. Tweak it until it sounds great (springy is a good starting point), then cycle amp models. You will get a great, unobstructed feel for the different sounds available on this amp.

Fender Twin ? This patch is simple, just a twin and a full module reverb. I tweaked the module a little and just love the ambience of it all.   I posted a long time ago looking for the perfect, lexiconish reverb module. This is it.
Boogieman ? This is a patch I came across accidentally.    It has a icebox chorus feel to it and is perfect for soloing to slower stuff and doing Wes stuff.   If you listen to any contemporary jazz you've heard this sound.
Soloing Smooth ? Great patch for slow soloing behind a worship song. One of my favorite patches.
Bob_KB ? New and improved model of Bob Hartman of Petra. The best hard rythmn patch I have.
Clean to Chorus ? Gives you two flavors with one push of the expression. Some songs I need a dryer clean sound, while others I like a lot more chorus.
Eric Johnson ? A tweaked patch I got from someone else. Awesome lead patch.
Harmony Central ? I love a brief intro or riff sometimes with a 7th attached. This one is silky smooth and sounds great.
Holy Is The Lord ? This is a patch I came up with for a song we do titled the same. It sounds awesome. Rythmn with the expression pedal back, come in during the open spaces and chunka-chunka with phase. I love this patch!
Rectifier solo ? A tweaked version of the factory. I like this almost as much as Eric patch.
Bass ? This is my patch to play bass when the bass players out. Play with your fingers for the best tone. Very passable in that only a guitarist in the crowd figured out what was going on.
Zion ? I came up with this patch for the intro to a song and am now absolutely hooked on it. Sounds great for leads, and slower power chording vibes.
Buddy Gill
Rockman patch ? Somebody on the list wanted a Rockman patch....this works using the XLR's -- not as good through the speakers. You need Updater and OS Ver 5.

It still could use a little precise "mid-high" tweaking to get the rockman's clean "sparkle," but it's a start.  (not enough room to drop in a PEQ with   all other modules needed)

On A channel, use strat position 2 or 4 -- Robert Plant-ish.

On the dirty B channel; turn off the dual delay (effect 8) and humbucker
Tie Ur Mother Down ? Brian May (Tie your mother down) is Vox Top Boost cranked to 10 on all (very >little mid), some floor switchable PEQ when you want to solo, a dual delay >of 1.5 seconds -- pedal brings it in for creating harmony runs with your >yourself, plus (last in chain) slight 5% detune for fuller sound (he uses 4 >Vox heads at once -- one dry, the rest for EFX/blended on stage)
Jimmy Page ? is marshall, variable gain for Exp1, the Johnson module Graphic EQ ON is what makes this kick, PLUS the "room" delay/ambience level, which is controllable with Exp2...For example, get strat middle pickup  and you'll hear "Presence" -- i.e., Candy Store Rock.  Page sets his hot-rodded marshalls at about 75% on tone/volumes, so this fits nicely...if you back off the gain (EXp1) it gets sweet.  Pll all the "room" out (back off Exp2) and you get "Since I've been Loving you" -- then push the pedal in about 33% wet from time to time.  Use your guitar's EQ tone knobs (humbuckers)_ to tweak the tone -- I did these with headphones...Enjoy!
Buddy Gill
So -- here are just a few home-brewed patches for your review.  They all use effects on/off switches 6-9, plus I us an Expression pedal for wah #3 (not on the J12).   I usually do variable amp gain control with left J12 pedal, instead of volume.
CARLTN Chorus Delay.mid ? I'm just getting into it, these are pretty basic.  The Carlton patch uses the exact parametric EQ settings he uses, but may be a little too mid range for most.
Bonnie.mid ? The "Bonnie" is Bonnie Raitt is a cool Vox (use a strat out of phase select) rhythm guitar sound she got on "Come to me" -- one of the few useful Vox sounds, unless you are doing old Beatles.
zappa 1.mid ? The Vai Legacy is a modification of a recent list post, I use a different Johnson amp model than the post said, but it is a KILLER tone.
zappa 2.mid ? -
vai legacy.mid ? -
Jeff MARSHALL.mid ? Jeff Beck and Uli Roth Marshalls...with Beck, I programmed it the night after I saw him play here in DC...you gotta use your fingers/no pick.
Uli MARSHALL.mid ? Uli Roth is a pretty amazing German guitarist, I don't like metal much but his Scorpions stuff was amazing as his some solo album playing.
HENDRIX (HotRodMARSHALL.mid ? The Hendrix patch is Fender A, Marshall B w/variable gain with J12 pedal -- use that gain its KEY for "right tone."  You can get a great "Rainbow bridge/Dolly Dagger/Pali gap" sound by channel b gain at around 5 and hitting the leslie on (one of the 6-9 switches).
_Black Face TWIN.mid ? Buddy's Blackface
FEEDBACKS w Echo.mid ? Buddy's Feedback
Funk TWIN.mid ? Buddy's Funk Twin
Carlos.mid ? Buddy's Carlos
Jim Sletner
Rotating Wah ? dumped from TIN
ryanmal@aol.com
"Old Metallica" ? hard saturated distortion with graphic EQ sucking out the mids
DC/30 clean wah preset ? I believe there's some chorus in there too
Fender clean ? my goal with this patch was to recreate the sound of a clean tele as much as I could with my Les Paul. I don't think it really succeeded, but I still love the patch.
Mat Martin
MATCHLESS Tele Blues.syx ? Stevie-like
Zep Breakdown.syx ? The Zep Breakdown patch is designed from notes on what Jimmy used to produce the sound for Communication Breakdown. Basically, he played a Tele on Led Zep 1 and he used a fuzz box with the mids boosted. The compressor is there to naturalize the sound a little.
Larry Stanos
Collective_Soul-Gel.syx ? Collective Soul's "Gel". Channel A provides tremolo and adds the dual pitch effect to double the riff played on the 1st and 2nd strings during the intro. Only the 1st and 2nd strings should be played. The dual pitch effect doubles the notes one octave lower instead of two octaves as shown in the notation because I didn't like how the doubled notes "broke up" at the -24 setting. Maybe someone could improve upon this. After playing the intro, switch to channel B, turn off tremolo, and turn off the dual pitch effect to dive into the first rhythm figure. I have switch #6 on the J12 assigned to perform all three functions.
wish_you_were_here.syx ? A patch for "Wish You Were Here". After reading the discussion on changing EQs using a controller pedal, I'm thinking this might be a possible improvement for this patch, but right now this is how it works: Use the bridge pickup alone and Channel B to play the first half of the intro with that tinny "over the radio" sound including that subtle whistling flange sound heard on the album. Switch to Channel A and lose the flanger using J12 foot switch 6 to segue to the studio and the lead guitar part that completes the intro. After playing the intro, switch to channel B, turn off tremolo, and turn off the dual pitch effect to dive into the first rhythm figure. I have switch #6 on the J12 assigned to perform all three functions.
Mark Iverson
HOT_120_Jazz_Chorus.syx ? Here's a patch that I use for a clean / 'hoo-wah'! situation. It's a modification of the 'JC-120 Jazz Chorus' preset with a hotter 'lead' channel. Use the exp. Pedal to control the amount of Chorus in the mix.
Mark Vermette
HeatOfTheDay.syx ? Here's my Pat Metheny patch. This patch requires the Sysex channel on the Johnson to be set to channel 1, the default. It replaces factory patch 37 ("Stray Dead Cats", which I personally found uninspiring).
carvin-Steve_Vai_Legacy_amp.txt ? Take a few seconds and enter this setup it gives a nice steve Vai sound
Simon Westway
Simon Says...All these were made using my Ibanez guitars, an Ernie Ball/Musicman EVH and a Musicman Luke, (all DiMarzio / EMGs) so obviously they'll sound different on your guitars.
LARD MesaBoogie Lead.mid ? My regular lead sound (I play in a cheesy rock covers band, you understand!)
TURD_MesaBoogie_Rhythm.mid ? Rhythm Equiv.
Big_LARD.mid ? LARD with huge reverb
Eric_Johnson.mid ? My approximation of EJ's great tone (as in "Cliffs of Dover") - the A channel gives a sound like "Manhattan" on Venus Isle
Bottle_O'_Becks.mid ? Jeff Beck - ish sound -remember not to use a pick though!
Hina.mid ? Patch with delay settings for the David Lee Roth song "Hina" (Steve Vai)
Stratmungous.mid ? Robben Ford patch for a Strat neck pickup, a bit like that on "Song for Life" on "the Blue Line"
Thin_Blue_Line.mid ? Another Robben Ford-like patch (lead on "The Brother")
Boogie_Flangola.mid ? Errrr, Boogie with a flanger (doh!)
Kevin Brown
Bob.syx ? Here is my "Bob" patch, modelled after Bob Hartman of Petra fame.   He gave me some tips on his sound which I rolled into this patch.   This is a great "chunka-chunka" patch, with good bottom.

  9-26-00 7 String from 6 Patches
I originally took the Factory Preset #84 "Too Heavy" and just tacked on a Stereo Pitch Shifter AFTER the GEQ8 and tweaked the GEQ8 to how I felt sounded good that day. After listening to it again last night I thought
it sounded kinda s#itty so I swapped the GEQ8 and Stereo Pitch Shifter around so that the signal went through the Shifter first then the sound as a whole can be tweaked with the GEQ8. The signal path turns into a MONO-STEREO->MONO configuration which is silly when you look at it that way. You may want to put a Stereo EQ as the last effect.

Also, try the different amp models. Too Heavy is a Rectifier Stack and gets that cold crunch but the Johnson hybrid models sounded cool, too.
Low_B_Itch.SYX
9-26-00 - the original 'Too Heavy' tweak with the pitch shifter after the GEQ8.

Low_B_Itch.ASC

9-26-00 - a text file showing the Low_B_Itch preset configuration.
Seven_Heavy.SYX 9-26-00 - same as above but with the effect module order swapped and the Mono GEQ8 replaced with a Stereo GEQ8 in a 'Smiley' pattern.
Seven_Heavy.ASC 9-26-00 - a text file showing the Seven_Heavy preset configuration.
